El Kanah

Local attractions

El Kanah is the ideal place from which to explore the surrounding mountains and valleys which host a diverse range of leisure activities.

The picturesque village of Marysville is being restored after the 2009 bushfires. Nestling in the lush green valley of the Great Dividing Range, and surrounded by majestic scenery, the town has many attractions. Gallipoli Park and Lake has a newly renovated children’s playground. There are numerous local bushwalking tracks for walkers of all levels of experience. Eco-Adventure Tours introduce visitors to local flora and fauna, and Rubicon Valley Horseriding is approximately 15 minutes out of town. For those who like to have fun at the snow, cross-country skiing and tobogganing are available in season at Lake Mountain Alpine Resort, only 25 minutes by car from El Kanah. Marysville also hosts Bruno's Art and Sculpture Garden, an old style Lolly Shop & Produce Store, and numerous craft shops and cafes.

All within a short drive are the beautiful Healesville Sanctuary, Marysville Trout & Salmon Ponds, Buxton Trout Farm, and Steavenson Falls. Cathedral Range is a great place for bushwalking, rock climbing, fishing or a relaxed family BBQ. About an hour away is Lake Eildon, a superb place for fishing and water skiing.

For others seeking passive recreation there are scenic drives through national parks. In fact, getting to Marysville is itself a beautiful journey as you cross the Black Spur and allow the trees and mountains to envelop you, leaving behind all of your busyness. Just an hour-and-a-half drive from the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, El Kanah feels like a world away. Come and walk through the fern gullies, breathe the clean mountain air and smell the sweet scents of the forest. You’ll love it here!
